Kind of annoying when a story skips over an explanatory detail.
Meteor hits the ship, Groden is hurt (we’re not told how), and thus (we’re not told why) he is blind, except he can see everything in hyperspace (abracadabra).
I mean, you could bang a radio to get it working, but it’s not like it turns into a television set.
