Podcast Feed Issues

Feeds for the following podcasts do not seem to be updating in the Apple Podcasts directory (and perhaps other services).

  • Relic Radio Science Fiction
  • Case Closed!
  • Relic Radio Thrillers
  • A Legacy Of Laughs

This seems to be an issue with Feedburner (a service that turns the website feed into a podcast feed) though the other podcasts work using the same service. Google purchased Feedburner years ago and haven’t done anything with it since. I’ve wanted to migrate away from it for some time, but I don’t know how smooth that transition will be. Broken feeds aren’t smooth either though I suppose…

Anyway, I’m working on the issue. You can always find new episodes of those podcasts on the site in the meantime.

UPDATE! Email Notification Service

The good news is that we have a reliable service for sending email notifications on new episode postings. It’s the one we always used.

The new service I tried, in anticipation of the old one no longer working, only worked once for me. And since the server changes I had to make did not affect the old service as I had anticipated (that I’ve noticed), we’re back to where we were.

If you unsubscribed to the old service you can subscribe again. The form is at the bottom of the page.

Should anything change I’ll update here again.

If you have signed up to be notified of new posts by email this change will affect you.

The service currently being used to send emails on new posts/podcast episodes to the website will be discontinued. That functionality is bundled into a larger service that will no longer be used in the “backend” of the Relic Radio website for reasons of performance and security.

I know 2,600 of you have signed up for those notifications, and I did find an alternative, but you will have to sign up to that service to receive notifications. There is no way for me to transfer your existing subscriptions, and even if there were, I don’t feel it would be my place to do so without your permission.

I will be shutting off the old service this Saturday, January 23.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Play Relic Radio with Alexa via Apple Podcasts

I recently received an email from Apple Podcasts stating the following:

Play Apple Podcasts with Alexa

Apple Podcasts is now available on Alexa-enabled Amazon devices in the United States. As a creator, you’ll find this presents an even greater opportunity for listeners to hear your show.

Spread the word on your show or episode promotion channels, and wherever else you communicate with your audience. For example, encourage them to say things like:

  • “Alexa, play [podcast title] on Apple Podcasts”
  • “Alexa, play [podcast title] from yesterday on Apple Podcasts”
  • “Alexa, skip ahead 30 seconds”
  • “Alexa, play the previous episode”

Learn more about how listeners can now play your show with Alexa.

The podcast titles as Apple Podcasts knows them are as follows. I assume punctuation is ignored when verbalizing them.

The Relic Radio Show (old time radio)
The Horror! (Old Time Radio)
Strange Tales (Old Time Radio)
Relic Radio Sci-Fi (old time radio)
Case Closed! (old time radio)
Relic Radio Thrillers (Old Time Radio)
A Legacy Of Laughs
Orson Welles On The Air

Hopefully some of you interested in playing the shows via these devices can get this to work. I tried this on my Kindle Fire, and although I could add Apple Podcasts to Alexa, playback wasn’t supported on that device. So, I couldn’t test this before I shared the information.

I’ll update here if I get any further information.

10 years and still going strong

10+ years and still going strong! Thank you to all who have listened over the years, some of you since the beginning, and to all whose generous support has made it possible to continue.

Relic Radio started out as an experiment with podcasting in 2007, and if you’d told me then I’d still be at it in 2018 I wouldn’t have believed you. But here we are.

I know there’s no shortage of ways to entertain oneself, or keep you company as you work or commute, so if you’ve chosen to put Relic Radio into the mix, thank you! Your enjoyment of the shows it what keeps me at it.

Thank you all for listening!
