Please do not ever play these episodes from this horrific era. I realize everyone has the clarity of a pen , but in this day and age there is no need to render this. I’m an avid fan but this turns my stomach.
You can recognize the evil of apartheid without completely dismissing the artistic output of South Africa during that time. It’s just silly to urge a moratorium like that. That’s like refusing to drive a Mercedes because that carmaker’s corporate parent was once mixed up with the Nazis.
And if you dismiss Beyond Midnight on that basis, you also have to dismiss the output of a Nobel Prize-winning novelist like J.M. Coetzee—at least that portion of it that he wrote during apartheid.
This is a truly great episode of a great program. Brilliantly written.
