This could have been my own story: while working on a PBS special on the Commonwealth meeting in Vancouver in 1988, my producer and I became so sleep-deprived we could barely think. He went down first, begging me to finish scripting the segment on Rajiv Gandhi. Somehow I finished and staggered to my room. A couple of drunk guys saw me from the rooftop garden and started dragging a table over and pounding on my window with chairs, trying to break in.
I called the operator for help, then again more urgently when it looked like the intruders would get in before help came. The next thing I remember was waking to loud ringing, which turned out to be my producer phoning me a couple of hours later to come fix some other story. I still don’t know how the attempted attack played out…my own strange tale.
